It's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the bad news we're bombarded with on a daily basis.

If it makes you depressed, try taking compassionate action for a cause you care deeply about.

This is an antidote to feeling helpless and can make a real difference to those who are suffering.

If you're a sensitive person, like me, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by all the suffering and bad news we are bombarded with on a daily basis. Climate change, wars, the existential threat posed by AI... It's just too much. That's why, in 2025, the Reuters Institute’s Digital News Report found that around 40 percent of people globally avoided the news. They felt overwhelmed and powerless to act.1

This is not a post about politics, or whether progressives or conservatives are right or wrong. It seems to me that we all want to live on a thriving, life-sustaining planet. We want our kids and families to be safe and healthy. We want everyone to have a fair chance at success in life. These values are not ideological, they are quintessentially human.

If you care about any or all of these things — and you're in the 60 per cent of people who do engage with the news — it's easy to feel discouraged, as if everything is bad and getting worse. And, of course, that's what the filter of all forms of news is intended to make you think, because fear, worry, outrage and anger keep us all clicking, scrolling and........
