When I drive west on Route 2 through Rollo Bay I’m dismayed at the deteriorating state of St. Alexis Church. Back in the 1950s I served as an altar boy and sang in the choir next to fellow parishioners, Lemmie Chaisson being notable. Fr Keefe was the priest. After serving as a chaplain in the war he was able to bring home the Jeep he used.
It is hard to believe the church was built during the depression years in the early ‘30s. When you think about that, the church is not old considering the age of some others, but it is deteriorating each day.
The roof line is straight, suggesting it has good legs.
I am sincerely wondering if there is an option to save the edifice. The church is tall enough to have two floors of apartments. A guesstimate would suggest 11 two-bedroom apartments, five on each floor, plus the vestry at the back that has room for a massive suite.
Doing simple math $1,800 per month for each apartment would realize over a quarter million yearly revenue. Amortized over 20 years would realize $4 million plus.
I am aware the structure needs a new roof, renovated........
