LETTER: Islanders are P.E.I.'s resource

Prince Edward Island doesn’t have much in the way of hard resources. Some good farmland. Some forest. Fish in the water around us, and enough natural beauty to draw people here every summer. None of it is worth anything by itself. Soil isn’t a farm. Water isn’t a fishery. A red sand beach isn’t a tourism industry. Every one of these things only becomes an economy because an Islander gets up and makes it happen. Islanders aren’t part of the resource list. We are the resource. The only one that does anything.

Which means the real question isn’t economy versus social services. It’s this: what does it take to keep that resource working, capable, healthy, willing to take a risk on something new.

We hear these two sides. One, focus on the economy, get out of the way of business, growth solves it. The other, focus on people, health care, education, the net underneath us. Most of us........
