Jeers to Health P.E.I. and the Department of Health and Wellness for a breakdown in communication that has led health professionals in the province to cite an “erosion of trust.” That phrase was uttered most recently in a letter to the health authorities signed by more than 100 doctors who say their questions remain unanswered about models of care they are being asked to choose between. At the same time, a presentation by former Health P.E.I. CEO Michael Gardam to Green party supporters was delivered in front of a screen that read “HPEI is neither well-liked nor trusted.” Gardam told the crowd that health workers describe being kept out of operations planning, leaving them feeling disrespected and, yes, like there’s an “erosion of trust.” There was a lot of rhetoric in both the letter and the speech but the bottom line is, there is a relationship needing repairing between those who govern health care and those who deliver it, and it starts with open dialogue.
