The Peterborough Singers begin their 36th season of choral music with a new conductor and a new rehearsal facility.

Conductor, pianist, and organist Shawn Grenke has been appointed the choir’s new artistic director and conductor, succeeding founding artistic director Syd Birrell, who retired in December 2025 after 35 years.

“I am looking forward to getting to know all the singers, sponsors, and audience members this season,” says Grenke, a Belleville native. “It is a huge honour to be taking over the amazing legacy that Syd created.”

In an open letter to the choir and its supporters, Grenke invites longtime patrons and first-time guests alike to “celebrate the stories, traditions, and connections that unite us as a community.”

In addition to a new conductor, the choir will be rehearsing at a new location, St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, located at 99 Brock St.
