Suicide prevention begins with a conversation
SEPTEMBER 10 is observed as World Suicide Prevention Day, providing an opportunity to focus attention on one of the most serious yet preventable public-health challenges facing communities worldwide. In 2026, the global campaign continues with the theme “Changing the narrative on suicide” and the call to action “Start the Conversation.” The message is simple but important: silence, stigma and misunderstanding must be replaced with openness, compassion and appropriate support.
According to the World Health Organization, more than 720,000 people die by suicide every year globally. Suicide affects far more than the individual. Families, friends, workplaces and entire communities can experience profound emotional, social and economic consequences following a suicide. WHO emphasizes that suicides are preventable and that effective prevention requires action from individuals, communities, health systems and governments.
