Beyond rivalries: A call for dignity and peace after the fighter jet crash in Dubai
The tragic crash of an Indian Air Force Tejas fighter jet during the Dubai Air Show has captured global attention and cast a solemn shadow across South Asia and far beyond. A talented young pilot lost his life in the course of demonstrating his nation’s prowess, undertaking a mission that demands extraordinary courage. At such a moment, before political interpretations or media narratives unfold, the first and most honorable human response must be compassion. A family is grieving, colleagues are mourning and a nation stands in shock. Tragedy speaks a language that transcends borders and sorrow knows no nationality.
Yet the emotional tenor of South Asian discourse often transforms human loss into a stage for mockery, schadenfreude or point-scoring. Such reactions are not only unbecoming but potentially destabilizing in a region already marked by historical wounds, nuclear capabilities and entrenched mistrust. Celebrating an adversary’s accident in no way elevates one’s own nation. Mocking the death of a soldier — any soldier — reflects poorly on those who partake in such behavior. As Pakistanis, heirs to a moral and religious tradition that upholds dignity, empathy and compassion even for those with whom we differ, we are duty-bound to rise above such impulses.
Pakistan’s military capability is globally recognized and respected. The world witnessed it once again in 2025, when the Pakistan Air Force displayed remarkable restraint, precision........
