Donald Trump’s $5,000 dividend promise will not materialize and will not succeed in conning Americans. At his midterm convention last week, he told voters that, were they to maintain GOP control of the House and the Senate, he would grant every adult U.S. citizen five grand each. Presumably, the president forgot to enunciate additional pledges for a pony and risk-tree stay at a beautiful beachfront timeshare property.

Now back to reality: This is not going to happen. It won’t happen if Democrats win back either or both houses of Congress, as they are expected to in what pollsters and political observers agree could well be a wave election.

It also won’t happen if Republicans retain control, including if they retain control as a result in part of this inane promise. Remember, Trump has promised things........
