Police imposing new tactics to combat rise in clashes outside asylum hotel

Senior officers are issuing 'rolling' Section 34 notices at the Brook Hotel, in Bowthorpe, which force people to stay off surrounding streets.

The tactic may lead to accusations that the authorities are curbing the public's right to protest but senior officers insist the orders are needed to prevent criminal behaviour.

The venue, on Barnard Road, has been the focus of febrile protests for months, with hundreds gathering each weekend at demonstrations calling for the hotel to stop being used in this way.

But as the weather has become colder and enthusiasm has waned, the weekend activity has tailed off.

However, a smaller group continue to visit the site on most evenings.

Some of those present have been accused of harassing staff and asylum seekers living at the hotel.

Videos are being posted online by the demonstrators, displaying incidents where laser pens and torches are being shone into the faces of staff and........
