Five roles have been lost so far, including a senior director position and operations staff responsible for maintenance work such as dredging.

And the agency has warned it may have to make further tough decisions after it had an 8pc cut to its revenue funding that left it with a £300,000 gap in its budget.

A spokesman said "significant change" is essential due to the scale of the cut and said some redundancies are an "inevitable" outcome.

It is another blow for the cash-strapped organisation, which is facing increased costs and more demands for its services.

In the cull, two vacant operations technicians' roles and two vacant communications roles have been lost.

Marie-Pierre Tighe, who was the director of strategic services, has agreed to leave the BA, meaning the number of director positions has been reduced from three to two.

The responsibilities held by this role will be shared by the director of finance and the director of delivery.

This latest round of job cuts is on top of an earlier reduction in the number of hours rangers are employed to monitor the waterways.........
