Self-build 'fusion home' bid rejected by planners

Proposals for the four-bedroom self-build home in Bawburgh - a village five miles west of Norwich - were lodged with South Norfolk Council in October 2025.

The scheme, which proposed a "traditional/contemporary fusion home" designed to minimise environmental impact, has been refused by planners who said it would not fit in with the surrounding area.

The plans explain: "The proposal has drawn inspiration from the key architectural features and materials observed within the immediate context of the site and the wider village, with double multi-gable elevations identified as a dominant feature."

However the council disagreed with the designs for the new development, believing it would harm the look of the area.

They said: "The proposed development would have an unacceptable impact on the character and appearance of the area by virtue of not respecting the character and form of the settlement as the dwelling would not be a logical or harmonious extension of the pattern of development on Harts Lane."
