A report of the site estimates between 260 and 360 bodies could be found at the former St Olave’s church beneath the shopping centre, which is currently being demolished.

It comes after archaeologists discovered bodies linked to the medieval Church of St Botolph elsewhere in the complex. Norwich City Council refused to say how many bodies were uncovered at this church but described it as a “small number of remains”.

Excavating, recording and reporting all the bodies at the St Olave's site could cost City Hall £187,000.

But the authority says it has already budgeted for this cost in the £350m redevelopment of the site which will be turned into homes, shops and workspaces.

Hundreds more bodies?

Dedicated to the Norwegian King Olaf, St Olave’s church was built in 1030, on the corner of what is now St Crispin’s Way and Pitt Street.

In a scope of investigation document it says anywhere between 260 and 360 human remains from the churchyard could be unearthed as progress continues on the multi-million pound development.
