'How can they lock us out of our own flat?'- occupants left furious for two days

The main door of Helgate Court, on Westwick Street in Norwich, broke on Wednesday afternoon (April 1) and is yet to be fixed two days later.

Residents have been unable to get into the building, owned by Orbit, through the main door at the front.

There is, however, a side door leading onto an alleyway that has now been left permanently open, leaving the people living there feeling unsafe.

Orbit, the housing group, initially said the issue would be resolved in four hours, but has yet to send out engineers.

Pauline Taylor, 85, who lives on the top floor, said: "How can they lock us out of our own flat?

"There are people here in 31 different flats who are very frustrated."

Ms Taylor added that two people have carers, and this situation is "really not good".

She added: "It's just too bad, the side door is now just open, and it's really dangerous.

"We have all been advised to lock our doors, and the police are aware of the situation."

After two days, a spokesman for Orbit said: "We apologise for the inconvenience customers have been experiencing with difficulties accessing one of the doors to Helgate Court.

"Our contractor partner is scheduled to attend today (3 April) to investigate and undertake any required repairs.

"We would like to thank our customers for their patience, and we will ensure we maintain close and regular contact with our contractor partner until all concerns are fully resolved.”
