Drivers caught up in the congestion are questioning why the council has allowed so many projects to take place on major routes at the same time.

Rich Brundall, 49, who works in the city said: "I can't believe all these roadworks have been allowed to happen at the same time.

"There's been no coordination with these works whatsoever.

"So many key routes around the city have been blocked off by roadworks all happening at once - it's so frustrating.

"I don't understand why they couldn't have been staggered in some way so that it makes things just a little bit easier for people."

GRIDLOCK CITY

Temporary traffic lights and road closures are affecting many major roads into and out of the city.

The biggest disruption is on the A140 Holt Road after lights were set up by the Amsterdam Way junction, near Norwich Airport, as part of a £1.9 million County Hall scheme to install a pedestrian and cycle route.

Works on this road are due to last until mid-November.
