People living on Vale Green next to the former Mile Cross depot, have been battling against the dust for weeks, which originates from mounds of building rubble that is being separated and refined.

One neighbour, whose car was covered in dust, said the situation has become so bad, he went to the site to request something be done but nothing changed.

They are now calling for Norwich City Council, which is managing the work there, to ensure contractors dampen down the rubble at the site.

Lynn Gillon, who lives in a home which backs onto the former depot, compared the dust from the site to a "sandstorm" amid the recent winds.

She said: "I thought it was for those homes they're building but they've turned it turned it into a dump site and it doesn't seem to end."

Neighbours feared the material was being shipped over from Anglia Square, which is currently being demolished.

However, City Hall has confirmed this is not the case and have reassured there is no asbestos in the rubble either.

Linda Hewett, a friend and neighbour of Ms Gillon, said: "I'm just disgusted. I've got asthma and I worry that that's affecting me. It's just terrible."

Sarah Jennings, who has lived at Vale Green for more than 10 years, added: "I get this film of dust on my curtains. It just covers everything. We can't hang up the washing or do the gardening and we need to be outside."

Richard Woodhouse, who has lived at the terraced homes since 1976, added: "You can feel it on your lips."

A spokeswoman for the council said: "There has been some recent work to separate materials left over from earlier developments that were completed several years ago.

"We apologize if this has created any dust, and we will make sure it is being dampened down. We can confirm there is no asbestos at the site."
