New digs at Roman site could lead to discovery of human remains
The latest dig by the community-led Caistor Roman Project (CRP) will see volunteers and experts excavating the defensive ditches around Caistor St Edmund - known in Roman times as Venta Icenorum.

The dig will take place in the grounds of Caistor Hall Hotel and focus on the early 2nd century ditches which formed part of a large defensive enclosure which surrounded the town.
The ditches have only been investigated twice before - south of the settlement in 2012 and to the north-east in 2016.
On those occasions both human and animal burials were discovered, along with personal and religious items and pottery vessels.
