Bill which will see Norfolk councils axed passes first hurdle amid dissent from MPs

The Labour government's plans will trigger the biggest change in local government in Norfolk since 1974 - ripping up the current set-up of eight councils.

They would be replaced by new unitary councils, which would have responsibility for all services, although it has yet to be determined how many councils there would be.

The new council or councils would have extra powers, over issues such as transport, planning and housing, through a devolution deal, under proposals in the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill.
