CES 2025: HDMI 2.2 Brings 12K Resolution and 96Gbps Bandwidth to the Future of Displays
The HDMI Forum has unveiled the HDMI 2.2 standard at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, promising higher bandwidth, better resolutions, and more advanced features for a wide range of applications. With a data transfer rate of 96Gbps, this new specification is a massive upgrade over the 48Gbps offered by HDMI 2.1b, allowing for resolutions of up to 12K at 120 frames per second (fps).
The HDMI 2.2 standard is designed to support next-gen audio and video needs. It offers:
While the upgrades in HDMI 2.2 might seem like overkill for regular home entertainment—most content today still maxes out at 4K60—its potential shines in commercial and professional use. The higher bandwidth is especially useful for applications such as:
To fully utilize HDMI 2.2, users will need new cables, as existing HDMI 2.1b cables max out at 48Gbps. The new Ultra96 HDMI cables will feature a certification label and a QR code for verification. Importantly, the HDMI connector itself hasn’t changed, so the transition won’t require new ports.
However, devices supporting the full HDMI 2.2 specification are still some time away. The complete standard will be released by mid-2025, and products based on it are expected to hit the market only by late 2025 or early 2026.
For most consumers, the benefits of HDMI 2.2 might not be immediately relevant. Current streaming services and physical media don’t yet support resolutions beyond 8K, and even that is far from mainstream. However, the HDMI Forum’s focus on emerging technologies like mixed reality and advanced imaging highlights the standard’s forward-thinking approach.
As Chandlee Harrell, President of the HDMI Forum, emphasized, the new specification is aimed at addressing the growing demand for high-performance capabilities across industries, ensuring HDMI remains a vital technology as media and display needs evolve.
