Chennai begins removing caste references from street names across city
The Greater Chennai Corporation has begun reviewing street names to identify caste references and implement Tamil Nadu’s policy against names linked to social discrimination. Around 77 such streets have already been identified in three zones. Authorities will either remove caste suffixes or rename streets entirely where caste forms part of the name.
Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has started a citywide exercise to identify street names carrying caste references, following a Tamil Nadu government directive aimed at removing names that could promote caste-based discrimination.
The civic body is examining streets and other public places within its jurisdiction as part of the state’s wider social justice initiative.
