Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas: Odisha's timeless legacy of global connections

New Delhi: As Odisha plays host to the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas, it is an opportune moment to reflect on the extraordinary legacy of the State’s global connections. For centuries, Odias have been trailblazers in venturing beyond the shores of India, not only as traders and merchants but also as cultural ambassadors.

Odisha’s history is a vivid tapestry of maritime adventure, cultural exchange, and an enduring commitment to enriching the human experience, wherever the Odias have set foot.

Long before the term NRI (Non Resident Indians) became part of modern lingua franca, Odias were among the first Indians to embrace the life of non-resident communities. The ancient merchants of Kalinga, known as Sadhabas, epitomised this spirit. These intrepid traders braved the vast and unpredictable waters of the Indian Ocean, setting out from the banks of the River Mahanadi on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima.

Their Boitas, large and sturdy vessels with fabric sails called Ajhala, were marvels of ancient maritime engineering. Guided by favorable winds and unshakeable resolve, they sailed to distant lands — Bali, Sumatra, Java, Thailand, and Sri Lanka — not only to trade but also to share the cultural wealth of Kalinga.
