Chennai: The Ministry of Railways has granted approval for the construction of a fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu at a proposed cost of ₹757.18 crore. The project, approved by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is designed to decongest one of the busiest and most critical rail sections in the state, which currently operates at 87% of its capacity.

The existing three-line corridor on the Chennai Beach-Villupuram-Tiruchirappalli-Kanyakumari route is heavily utilized by suburban, long-distance, and freight trains, leading to frequent congestion that affects punctuality and limits capacity expansion.
