Trump’s plastic straw revival: A bold step taken backwards

In a move that surprises absolutely no one familiar with his track record, US President Donald has decided that the most pressing environmental issue of our time is… [drumroll]… the inconvenience of paper straws. You read that right! So pressing is the issue (according to him) that he has already signed an executive order banning their use and switching back to plastic straws.

Less than a month in the Oval Office, Trump is already signing executive orders as if there’s no tomorrow. According to reports, he has signed more than 50 executive orders as of Friday (February 7, 2025) — the most in a US President’s first 100 days in more than 40 years.

The order, banning the use of paper straws in federal agencies, reverses (an already) modest attempt to curb single-use plastics. Besides banning federal agencies from purchasing paper straws, the order directs them to ensure plastic straws are used within federal buildings. “It is, therefore, the policy of the United States to end the use of paper straws,” reads the Executive Order, dated February 10, 2025.

Soon after signing the order, Trump interacted with the reporters, where he said, “It’s a ridiculous situation. We’re going back to plastic straws.” He went on to add, “I don’t think that plastic is going to affect the sharks very much as they’re eating, as they’re munching their way through the ocean.”
