Tale of two Indias: While rural belt battles hunger, urban women struggle with obesity
India is facing a double-edged sword when it comes to nutrition. The latest report released by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, titled ‘Women and Men in India 2024: Selected Indicators and Data’, throws a sharp spotlight on how imbalanced nutrition and obesity are in India. On World Health Day (April 7), we crunch the numbers to understand how India is hurtling headlong towards a massive health crisis.
The report, highlighting NFHS-5 (2019–21) data, indicates that 24 per cent of the women between 15 and 49 years of age are overweight or obese, while 22.9 per cent of the men in the same bracket fall under the ‘obese’ category. To put this in perspective, about one in every four women and one in every five men in the reproductive age group are overweight or obese in India.
The year is 2025, and the sad reality of the country is that rural India is still battling undernourishment, even in this day and age.
The latest data shows that 14.9 per cent of rural Indian women aged between 15 and 49 years are underweight, as compared to 8.9 per cent of urban women in the country. This yawning gap throws a sharp........
