The AI We Need: Made by India for India
As the world gathers at Paris for the AI Summit today and tomorrow, with Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, as its co-chair, it’s evident that artificial intelligence is as much a top-drawer issue with global leaders as geo-politics and national security.
The Paris summit, which comes in the wake of a similar summit held in Bletchley, UK, in November 2023 and South Korea last year, will focus on five key issues: public service AI, future of work, innovation and culture, trust/ethics in AI, and global governance of AI. Ultimately, the leaders gathered in Paris hope to achieve three major objectives of 1) providing access to independent, safe and reliable AI to all; 2) developing AI that is more environmentally friendly and not the energy guzzler that it is today; and ensuring effective and inclusive governance of AI around the world.
But perhaps the most important goal that the summit has set for itself is a foundation that will look at AI in the public interest, especially in Global South.
Global consensus on guardrails and standards for AI is absolutely important. But from India’s perspective, it is vital that we have AI that is made by India for India at the very least. If some parts of our AI value chain can be exported or used globally, well, great. Otherwise, we have a large enough population that can consume AI to create tremendous economic value. The way China built its own internet companies should serve as an instructive lesson.
It’s no coincidence that OpenAI’s Sam Altman landed in India........
