India’s car crash tests get a big upgrade: Chennai facility to get 3,000 fps cameras
Chennai's Global Automotive Research Centre is receiving a ₹221.13 crore upgrade under the PM E-DRIVE scheme. The investment covers EV battery testing, advanced driver assistance systems and crash safety equipment, including cameras capable of recording at 3,000 frames per second.
According to the Ministry of Heavy Industries, GARC has already placed purchase orders for almost all the proposed equipment, and installation has begun. The centre, located in Oragadam near Chennai, is authorised to test and certify vehicles and automotive components under India’s Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
New crash testing cameras can record at 3,000 fps
One of the interesting additions is a high-speed imaging system that will record what happens during a vehicle crash.
The cameras can capture footage in UHD 4K at up to 750 frames per second. Switch to Full HD, and that figure increases to 3,000 frames per second.
