UK family travels to India as 45-day-old baby undergoes complex robotic kidney surgery

A 45-day-old baby weighing under 5 kg underwent robotic kidney surgery in Coimbatore after the family travelled from the UK to India. The procedure treated a blockage in the infant's better-functioning kidney, with the baby able to breastfeed within six hours after surgery.

New Delhi: A family from the UK travelled to Coimbatore in India for a complex kidney operation on their 45-day-old baby, in a case that shows how robotic surgery is moving into some of the smallest and most difficult patients.

The infant, who weighed less than 5 kg, underwent robotic pyeloplasty at Hindusthan Hospital in Coimbatore. Urologist and robotic surgeon Dr M. Ramalingam performed the procedure using the SSI Mantra robotic surgical system. For a baby this small, even a few millimetres matter during surgery.
