The Phantom’s Howl. Classic Tales of Ghosts and Hauntings from Bengal

New Delhi: Arundhati Nath, the celebrated head of Teamwork Arts, recalls her grandmother telling her many tales of ghosts and witches, since when ‘Bengalis and their curious relationship with the supernatural have always intrigued me.’ Even the ‘most self-respecting Bengali authors,’ she states, have attempted this genre of fiction, and in evidence thereof, has complied 11 short ghost stories, though there is no element of the ‘generous and heavy dose of humour’ in them which Arundhati claims characterizes the Bengali tradition.

The 11 stories Arundhati has translated comprise two each by Hemendra Kumar Roy, Bibhutibhushen Bandyopadhyay and Rabindranath........
