Trump argues that this policy encourages illegal immigrants to give birth in the US so their children can become US citizens.
Birthright citizenship is a legal principle that grants citizenship to anyone born on the country’s soil, regardless of the legal status of their parents. The United States is among 34 countries that recognise this practice. This right is enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment of the US Constitution, which was ratified in 1868.
