The shutdown followed a desperate attempt to restructure the company’s debt. While a deal with bondholders seemed possible back in March but the sudden spike in fuel costs linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict made it impossible for the airline to keep going. Spirit’s leadership confirmed that without the bailout, they simply ran out of cash to keep the planes in the air.
