Mumbai’s 122-year-old Kyani & co licence suspended after FDA finds rat droppings, cockroaches

Mumbai's historic Kyani & Co has had its FSSAI licence suspended after an FDA inspection found rat droppings, live flies, dead cockroaches, cats and other serious food safety violations.

New Delhi: The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the FSSAI licence of Mumbai’s historic Irani cafe and restaurant Kyani & Co. after an inspection found serious food safety and hygiene violations, including rat droppings, live flies and dead cockroaches.

The inspection was carried out on September 27 by an FDA team led by commissioner Tukaram Mundhe as part of the department’s statewide festive-season food safety crackdown under its ‘Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra’ campaign.

Established in 1904, Kyani & Co. is among Mumbai’s oldest surviving Irani cafes. The restaurant is known for its vintage interiors, high ceilings, affordable snacks and tea.
