No to fat shaming, yes to inane weight loss fads: Hypocrisy, habit or circumstance?
New Delhi: Fat or fit, fab or flab — believe it or not these are questions that are still very much a part of our current discourse. And we are in the 21st century! Either time has stood still or we are following a reverse personality graph, either way, stagnant dialogues seem to be order of the day. Why else would we go digging into our past and bring to the fore redundant (both medically and metamorphically) ideas of health and wellness, of what constitutes beauty and what doesn’t. Why else would leaders like Shama Mohamed, a spokesperson of the Congress party, talk down on Indian cricketer Rohit Sharma for being overweight? While such loose talk doesn’t augur well with the progressive “image” that India carries at the moment, it also doesn’t sit pretty with our over all campaign against obesity.
Add to this our brazen obsession of following all kinds of weight loss fads that end up causing more damage than good and we have a heady cocktail. It is considered to be a paradox by many that we are completely averse to body shaming but at the same time not confident to be in our own skin. Isn’t that why pills such Ozempic and Wegovy are popular in our circles? Isn’t that also why we have fallen prey to every weight loss fad that has received global acclaim — be it the intermittent fasting format or the umpteen Keto diets, be it following a strict Mediterranean fare or even blindly pursuing the apple........
