AI Mahabharata: PM Modi to co-chair Paris summit; Why India’s ‘vishwa guru’ dream hinges on tech supremacy

New Delhi: There’s a race brewing at the ‘City of Romance’ today (tomorrow as well) and the significance of the timing is not lost on any of us. Yes, love is in the air, but so is a battle and a very well-matched contest at that. PS: There’s nothing “artificial” about this war either! World leaders converge at Paris for a two-day summit on ‘Artificial Intelligence’ but what’s new, you ask? In its third edition, this action summit in France, is only big, bigger, colossal this time… Of course, a proud moment for India as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to co-chair the Summit, it is also vital because the dialogue is expected to open up a Pandora’s box of discussions around AI governance — and the way forward for countries who are in the AI race.

It is indeed a parley where every nation is expected to safeguard their individual interests. So, the US and China, both frontrunners in this AI powerplay, would want to keep the monopoly with themselves as it gives them a distinctive head start in the world order. UK, France and the UAE would want to bridge this gaping gap and be seen as “potential players” in the race too. For India, both the Summit and the discussions around AI, is happening at a critical juncture when we realise that the path to becoming a ‘Vishwa Guru’ runs (more or less) via technological supremacy. The world is watching whether India has the capability and the potential to seize the moment or be left playing catch-up.

But in the global order of things where inter-dependency could be a good........
