New York Catholic Archdiocese agrees to $800 million settlement over sexual abuse claims

The Archdiocese of New York has agreed to pay $800 million to settle sexual abuse claims brought by around 1,300 people against clergy members and lay workers. The agreement, reached after more than seven years of litigation, also includes provisions for releasing information about accused church officials.

New Delhi: The Catholic Archdiocese of New York has agreed to an $800 million settlement with around 1,300 people who alleged they were sexually abused by clergy members and lay workers, in one of the largest such settlements involving the Catholic Church in the United States.

Lawyers representing the survivors announced the agreement on Saturday, October 24. Archbishop Ronald Hicks also confirmed the development in an email to clergy members, saying the agreement had been reached but still required formal signatures to become final. The paperwork is expected to be signed during the week........
