22 death sentences in 4 months: Why UP Judge’s record is under focus

Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar has sentenced 35 convicts to death during postings in Muzaffarnagar and Bareilly, drawing renewed attention to his capital punishment record and the rarest of rare doctrine.

New Delhi: Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar has sentenced 22 convicts to death in 10 cases since taking charge in Muzaffarnagar, bringing the total number of death sentences awarded by him so far to 35.

Diwakar first came into the national spotlight in 2022, when he ordered a videographic survey of the Gyanvapi mosque complex in Varanasi. His latest record in capital punishment cases has now brought renewed attention to his judicial career.
