Webb Space Telescope peers into star factory in Phoenix Galaxy Cluster
New Delhi: Astronomers have been observing the Phoenix Galaxy Cluster at a distance of 5.8 billion lightyears from the Earth for over a decade, using ground and space based telescopes. The group of galaxies is of particular interest to astronomers because of its high rate of star formation. Stars are formed for particular dense knots of cold gas and dust. An actively feeding supermassive black hole quenches star formation in the surrounding environment, by heating the gas and preventing it from cooling down. The James Webb Space Telescope has found an explanation to the mystery, in the form of additional gas reservoirs.
