New Delhi: Scientists have uncovered evidence that there are many more supermassive black holes lurking in the universe than previously believed. These supermassive black holes are shrouded by infalling gas and dust, which makes them hard to spot. The conventional estimate of such hidden supermassive black holes was at around 15 per cent, now the scientists believe that around 35 per cent of supermassive black holes may have been overlooked. Some of these hidden supermassive black holes are so obscured that they even block out low-energy light in X-ray wavelengths. The researchers conducted the black hole census based on the accretion discs of supermassive black holes.
