Astronomers spot supermassive black holes cooking their own meals
New Delhi: Supermassive black holes constantly grow increasingly massive by feasting on surrounding gas and dust, as well as any wayward star systems. While most of this material disappears beyond the event horizon, a region surrounding the singularity from which even light cannot escape, some are ejected in the form of jets and shockwaves. Astronomers have now discovered that these jets or outbursts can prime the surrounding gas for consumption for the black hole, providing evidence to support theoretical predictions that black holes can cook their own meals. The researchers used a combination of ground and space-based telescopes for the study.
