Astrobotic to develop 30m high solar arrays for Moon power grid
New Delhi: Astrobotic has been awarded a contract by NASA to develop its Extra Large Vertical Solar Array Technology (VSAT-XL) towards building a power grid on the Moon. The solar arrays can tower over 30 m tall with 20 m long solar panels, generating 50 kW of power. The solar arrays can stand without toppling because of the lack of a dense atmosphere and weather system on the Moon as well as its low gravity. These solar arrays can provide power to hardware that reaches the lunar surface, that will benefit from not having to carry their own power source.
