Opinion | Bihar Results: Congress Under Rahul Gandhi Is Hindering, Not Helping, The Opposition
The recent elections in Bihar have caused a level of bewilderment comparable only to the Lok Sabha elections of 2014 and 1977. The results have not only shocked the Opposition but also left the ruling coalition’s supporters in disbelief. Psephologists and commentators are scrambling to create theories to maintain their credibility.
While Tejashwi Yadav’s RJD and its minor allies have slipped into a coma, the Congress party’s reaction is truly perplexing. The phrase “in defeat defiance" is well-known, but the Congress’s response seems to go beyond arrogance and into denial.
For an individual, such behaviour might suggest a borderline personality disorder. However, for a 140-year-old party led by formidable strategists and seasoned politicians, it indicates a deeper problem. While this might be overlooked in a minor political outfit, it calls for serious examination when it affects the country’s principal Opposition.
Initially, the Congress’s claims of EVM tampering seemed like mere excuses. However, as they escalated to allegations of “vote chori," accusations against the Election Commission, and personal attacks on the Chief Election Commissioner, it became evident that something was seriously amiss within the organisation.
Rahul Gandhi’s much hyped press conference, just before the second round of voting in Bihar, followed by one of his frequent foreign sojourns was carefully timed and choreographed. The morning after the election results, far from any signs of reflection or introspection, it was unsurprising to see the entire communication cell and influencer network actively denouncing the BJP and the Election Commission on social........
