Being Indian | Indian Commentariat: Blowing A Delusional Bubble?
India is a country we love, an ancient civilisation and a modern state. The most populous nation in the world, with a hard-working, young population. A democratic country with visionary leadership. Even the fastest-growing large economy in the world.
All this is true. And much more. Indeed, there is so much to be proud about being Indian today. Who can doubt that Bharat has emerged as one of the most influential global players in the 21st century.
Yet, despite its economic progress and growing geopolitical stature, the discourse within its intellectual and media circles often seems to be locked in a relentless cycle. Praise ourselves sky-high and criticise the rest of the world.
I hope I am wrong, but isn’t it true that in our recent H1 jhatka from the United States, we went to town not only bashing the maverick and outspoken, not to mention disruptive, US President Donald J Trump, but also crowing about how good this was for India?
Perhaps, it may be. In the longer run. With more talent remaining here than flocking to the no-longer promised land. But in the shorter run, it will hurt us. Many of our better, if not the best, techies depend on the H-1B lottery. Without it, they will have many fewer opportunities and much less income. Worse, those who are awaiting renewal or new........
