Opinion | One Beat At A Time: Treating Children With Heart Diseases

Many things have changed in the management of children with heart diseases, since the first ever surgery performed on a ‘Blue Baby’ in 1944. Newer developments and technology have made the treatment of Congenital Heart Diseases much safer in the current era.

What has not changed is the anxiety and stress that young parents face when they are told their child has a heart disease. What to do, whom to show, how costly will the treatment be, and are we doing the right thing?

As a congenital cardiac surgeon, the treatment I offer is not just for the children; it also involves supporting and holding hands with the parents during the most stressful times of their lives. And when these kids come out smiling from their illness, start school, choose careers they want to pursue, we stand alongside the parents again to see what miracles we have helped happen.
