In a morning post on X on August 12, Congress dynast Priyanka Gandhi Vadra launched a barrage of verbal missiles at Israel. “The Israeli state is committing genocide. It has murdered over 60,000 people, 18,430 of whom were children. It has starved hundreds to death including many children and is threatening to starve millions," she posted. “Enabling these crimes by silence and inaction is a crime in itself. It is shameful that the Indian Government stands silent as Israel unleashes this devastation on the people of Palestine."

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has an immediate and narrow political logic. She is the sitting MP from Kerala’s Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency which has nearly 48 per cent Muslims.

Also, the Congress is heavily investing in a victory in the Kerala 2026 Assembly elections. It has been sitting out of power for two successive terms, a record in the state.

Congress’s victory in the coming polls hinges on Muslim votes (26.56 per cent in the 2011 Census). And sympathy for Gaza — 4,900 km away from Kochi — resonates very strongly in the state. Hamas terrorist Khaled Mashaal, killed recently in the Israel precision strikes on Doha in Qatar, had even addressed a rally of the Solidarity Youth Movement in Malappuram on October 27, 2023.
