Opinion | Modi Started India’s Own DOGE A Decade Ago, But Chainsaw Needed For Bureaucracy Now
It may not have come with the elan of Elon Musk posters with a sniffer dog and dark glasses, or him wielding a chainsaw, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the equivalent of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) over a decade ago. Modi cut through a more corrupt, cumbersome, complicated system with surprising success.
The reforms keep giving and are constantly being expanded.
But the time has come to up the pace. It is time India fat-shamed and put on an unrelenting treadmill the elephant in the room: its bureaucracy.
Modi had started his journey as the Prime Minister promising minimum government and maximum governance. No other government before the current one has waged a war against waste, leakage, and bureaucracy.
Leakages and corruption used to be so endemic that Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 famously remarked that for every rupee the government spends towards welfare, only 15 paise reaches the needy.
While Modi periodically reminds the Congress of that quote, right from the beginning of his tenure he got down to systemic reforms.
