Opinion | Modi In The Mind: PM’s Six Biggest Intangible Feats In 12 Years

The true scale of the Modi phenomenon lies in subtle yet profound shifts in India’s collective psyche, and how he has altered the way individuals and institutions behave

After 12 years as prime minister, Narendra Modi’s most enduring legacies may not be measurable solely in GDP figures, kilometres of roads built, or number of surgical strikes and missile hits on Pakistan. Nor do 580 million Jan Dhan bank accounts, 120 million toilets built under the Swachh Bharat Mission, 106 million subsidised gas cylinders, or 620 million medical insurances—all given to the poor—fully demonstrate how he has changed India.

The true scale of the Modi phenomenon lies in subtle yet profound shifts in India’s collective psyche, and how he has altered the way individuals and institutions behave which he has brought about. A Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) audit or a NITI Aayog dashboard cannot capture those. They are shifts in the national psyche.
