Opinion | Kashmir Regresses Over Gulmarg Fashion Show As Saudi Embraces Modernity
Islamists and political forces that had driven Jammu and Kashmir into being a swamp of blood and bigotry are still to accept that the state has been freed from the prison of Article 370. They are in denial that Indian laws, not Sharia, have kicked in in the Valley with full force.
Why otherwise would there be such a hissy fit over a recent fashion show in Gulmarg, that too a privately organised one that was not open to the general public?
Which Indian law forbids fashion shows from being held?
Did the event showcase nudity?
Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a dyed-in-the-wool separatist, termed the fashion show held during Ramzan “outrageous" and “obscene". He said “such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in Kashmir".
Was it a government event done with taxpayers’ money?
Did anyone invite or force Mirwaiz to attend it?
Immediately on the defensive, CM Omar Abdullah said: “The images I have seen show a complete disregard for local sensitivities and that too during this holy month."
