Trump, Melania Demand Jimmy Kimmel firing over ‘Expectant Widow’ Joke

United States President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have called for the dismissal of late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel after remarks made during a comedy monologue sparked a political and media controversy in Washington. The dispute has escalated into a broader debate over political satire, media responsibility, and free expression in the United States.

At the centre of the row is a joke delivered by Kimmel during a satirical segment linked to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. He referred to Melania Trump as having “a glow like an expectant widow,” a line that was widely circulated online and condemned by Republican figures and Trump supporters. Critics of the joke argued it was in poor taste, particularly in the context of a recent security incident near a gathering of journalists and political figures.

Following the monologue, Melania Trump publicly criticised Kimmel on social media, calling his remarks “corrosive” and accusing him of spreading “hate” and “violent rhetoric.” She urged ABC, the broadcaster of Kimmel’s show, to take action, arguing that such commentary contributes to political division in the United States. She said comedians should not be allowed to “enter our homes each evening to spread hate,” intensifying pressure on the network.

President Donald Trump went further, describing the comments as “far beyond the pale” and calling for Kimmel to be immediately removed from his role by ABC and its parent company, Disney. Speaking on his social media platform, Trump characterised the joke as a “despicable call to violence,” language that sharply escalated the dispute from satire into alleged political incitement.

Kimmel, however, has rejected accusations that his remarks were violent or targeted. He said his comments were a light political roast and insisted they had been taken out of context. According to him, the joke referenced Trump’s age and the tone of the White House event rather than any violent implication.

The controversy has revived long-standing tensions between Kimmel and the Trump political circle. The comedian has frequently mocked Trump in his programmes, while Trump has repeatedly accused mainstream media and entertainment figures of bias. Past disputes have included regulatory pressure on broadcasters and temporary suspensions of Kimmel’s programme following political backlash.

Neither ABC nor Disney has issued a detailed response so far, leaving the future of the dispute uncertain as political and media criticism continues to build.
