Shehbaz Sharif’s Suit Draws Global Praise From Menswear Expert

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has drawn rare acclaim from global menswear circles after fashion commentator Derek Guy, widely known as the “menswear guy” on X, highlighted his refined approach to Western tailoring. The endorsement came after images surfaced of Sharif attending the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, where his choice of a cream double-breasted suit stood out amid a sea of conventional dark tones.

Derek Guy, editor of Put This On, noted that some of the finest examples of Western-style tailoring are often worn by leaders from non-Western countries. Alongside Sharif, he cited Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Nigerian economist Akinwumi Adesina as figures who exemplify distinctive and confident sartorial identities on the global stage.

Interesting to me that when you see men on the global stage, beautiful Western-style tailoring is often worn by men from non-Western countries. A Calculated Departure from Convention

Sharif’s ensemble marked a deliberate shift away from the standard navy and black suits typically favoured in political settings. His cream, double-breasted suit—paired with a light grey shirt and dark brown Oxford shoes—projected a softer yet authoritative aesthetic.

Lighter tones in tailoring are notoriously unforgiving, revealing even minor imperfections in fit and construction. Yet Sharif’s suit appeared meticulously cut, with clean lines and a structured drape that suggested a high-quality wool or wool-mohair blend. The fabric maintained its shape in motion, reinforcing an impression of composure and control.

Precision in Structure and Silhouette

The jacket followed a classic six-on-two double-breasted configuration, often regarded as a benchmark of balanced tailoring. A full chest, gently tapered waist, and well-proportioned peak lapels created a cohesive silhouette that naturally drew attention upwards.

Attention to detail extended to the shoulders and sleeves, which struck a balance between softness and structure. The clean fall of the sleeves and absence of tension lines indicated a near-bespoke level of craftsmanship. The trousers complemented the jacket with a streamlined cut and a single break, preserving a continuous visual line.

Understated Elegance and Symbolism

Accessories were restrained yet meaningful. A Pakistani flag pin and conference insignia added identity without distraction, while the muted tie maintained harmony within the outfit. This restraint aligns with what menswear experts describe as “quiet luxury” — an emphasis on craftsmanship over conspicuous display.

Beyond Fashion: A Statement of Statecraft

Sharif’s appearance underscores how clothing can function as a tool of diplomacy. By combining precision tailoring with subtle colour choices, the prime minister conveyed authority without severity and formality without distance.

In an era dominated by fast fashion and ill-fitting formalwear, the ensemble serves as a reminder that meticulous tailoring remains a powerful, if understated, form of communication on the world stage.
