NY drives leadership in battery energy storage safetyDoreen M. Harris
As New York State continues its clean energy transition, Battery Energy Storage Systems, or BESS, are helping to modernize the state’s energy grid. Safely sited BESS cost-effectively optimize power generation and transmission, enhance energy grid infrastructure, and bolster the reliability and resilience of electricity systems.
Beyond grid benefits, this resource is also a proven job creator, growing jobs in the clean energy industry, with over 2,900 New Yorkers currently employed in the grid modernization and energy storage sectors.
At the same time, the state’s energy storage programs are expected to reduce projected future statewide electric system costs by nearly $2 billion and build on the state's portfolio of operating and under construction energy storage projects, which will be capable of storing and discharging enough energy to power more than 700,000 New York households.
BESS are not unique to New York; there are thousands of projects operating around the world. What sets our state apart is its demonstrated leadership in energy storage safety and the commitment to ensure the health and well-being of New York........
