A Kashmiri Grandmother’s Legacy of Love
By Syed Majid Gilani
When I reflect on the people who shaped my early life, no one stands out more than my grandmother, Syeda Sakina Gilani. Amma, as we called her, was more than a grandmother. She was the pillar of our family, the embodiment of love, grace, and unwavering faith.
Born in 1930 in Srinagar, Amma came from a distinguished lineage. Her father, Syed Ahmad Gilani, was a successful businessman and political representative in Yarkand, Central Asia. But Amma never met him, as he passed away long before she reached adulthood.
Amma’s life was one of quiet strength. She married Syed Abdul Rashid Gilani, my grandfather, at a young age. Despite coming from a family where education was highly valued, she chose to dedicate herself to her home and family. She was one of the first women in Kashmir to graduate from Punjab University, Lahore.
While she could have pursued a career, Amma’s commitment to her family was unparalleled. She often said, “True fulfillment lies in nurturing those around you.”
Growing up, I often found myself marveling at her balance of discipline, kindness, and spirituality. Amma’s daily routine was rooted in faith. Before dawn, she would pray Tahajjud and Fajr Namaz, followed by hours spent........
