Trump's Greenland comments are smart: he is speaking the language of Putin and Xi
Donald Trump knows how to delight his fans and confound his enemies. The prospect of a Greater Trumpland, with new borders drawn up by the President-elect, has created a global tizzy.
His press conference at Mar-a-Lago appeared to be a stream-of-consciousness melee of ideas, from ridiculing low pressure showers that “drip, drip, drip” to presenting aggressive, expansionist plans for America straight out of a “how-to-rule” manual for strongmen and dictators.
“What a dripshit,” the late-night TV comedian Jimmy Kimmel scoffed. Others have described Trump’s proposal to acquire Greenland and reclaim the Panama Canal – without ruling out using military might – as insane. The internet is lighting up with memes of Canada slathered in the stars and stripes after Trump also said he would use “economic force” to turn the US’s northern neighbour into the 51st state.
By now, though, Trump has proved that he deserves to be taken seriously and literally. In fact, he has a cunning plan that could work to America’s advantage. Trump thinks the US should be as aggressive........
